Oceanfront Options – The North Shore – Ehukai Beach
By the time the winter big wave surfing competitions conclude at the famous beaches of Oahu’s North Shore, visitors and competitors from all parts of the world will have been exposed to the energy and ambiance of this unique part of Hawaii. Many have purchased their own personal “piece of paradise,” contributing to the diversity of the North Shore communities.
North Shore real estate has continued to appreciate dramatically over the past three decadess. Homes along the stretch of coastline between Kahuku and Kaena Point range from “beach shacks” to multi-million dollar estates and condominium developments. Kamaaina families have continued to maintain both primary and secondary residences on the North Shore, and companies such as Billabong, Hurley, and Volcom have purchased properties in choice beachfront locations. Commercial development is concentrated primarily in Haleiwa Town, where several new commercial projects have just been completed. Despite the extensive media exposure and the increase in upscale residential real estate development, the North Shore of Oahu continues to resist excesses of urban encroachment and retain its country atmosphere.
A direct view of the North Shore’s iconic Banzai Pipeline surf break and a large, 7,467-square-foot lot extending to the wide, sandy shoreline are features of a classic beachfront home offered by Sterman Realty at $3,800,000 and recently covered by the Los Angeles Times.
The article states that the property is “set behind a surfboard-lined gate” and is “filled with hardwood floors and indoor-outdoor living spaces.” It continues, “Sliding glass doors lead to a covered cabana surrounded by a palm tree-dotted lawn. Further out, a charming patio sits feet from the sand.” Also noted is the “step-down living room,” and the open floor plan where “a breakfast bar connects a family room to a spacious kitchen.”
“As you know, oceanfront homes at world-famous Pipeline do not come up very often,” said listing Realtor and long-time North Shore resident Elizabeth Suratt. “This home has the perfect location to be able to watch the pros surf the ‘Pipeline Masters,’ as well as enjoy views from Kaena Point to Sunset Beach. From the home you can walk miles in either direction on the sandy beach.”
Suratt said the home, built in 1948 on the shore of Ehukai Beach, is owned by Brandon League, formerly with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners. It was remodeled in 2015 to reflect a more open and modern beach cottage feel.
The 1,308-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bath home is set off from Kamehameha Highway by a relatively private road and bike path. Nearby are bus stops, tennis courts, golf ranges, grocery stores, churches, and schools.
“When the ocean is calm, generally during summer months, Ehukai is ideal for swimming, boating, kayaking, and snorkeling,” Suratt said. “The North Shore has a special energy that keeps people active and young. As a lifelong resident, I haven’t found a better place to call home.”
