Coastal Options – Southeastern Oahu – Diamond Head

In the late 1950s a unique new neighborhood was in the early stages of development at the eastern end of Waikiki. By the end of the 1960s, the half-mile of prime real estate between the ocean and Kapiolani Park was occupied by high rise condominium and co-op apartment buildings and the Gold Coast had acquired its present skyline.

Currently a new evolution is underway involving the renovation and restructuring of residences in the 16 buildings made possible by changes in the policies of owners associations together with the need to upgrade to meet new buyer requirements. Most of these upgraded units have been sold, but a few remain available.

The largest of the Gold Coast apartments is the luxurious three bedroom, three and a half bath, completely remodeled penthouse that tops the Tahitienne. Its 2,800-square-foot interior is augmented by a 645-square-foot lanai, providing more outdoor living space than any other Gold Coast apartment. It is currently offered by Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties Realtor and luxury home specialist Anne Oliver at $6,400,000, inclusive of two parking spaces and some furnishings.

The remodeling of the penthouse, which occupies the entire 9th floor of the Tahitienne, was completed in 2008 By the ID Group of Los Angeles. The sleek, contemporary design is complemented by high-quality finishes, including terrazzo floors, custom cabinetry, designer lighting, and luxurious stone counters, The kitchen is equipped with top-of-the-line appliances. Additional features include central air conditioning with separate zoning, sound system throughout, and Fleetwood sliding glass doors that pocket into the walls.

Interior living spaces flow seamlessly to the covered outdoor lanai with its 60 linear feet of ocean frontage embracing the ocean and Waikiki coastline. Oliver noted that the lanai is ideal for outdoor dining and greatly increases the potential for large scale entertaining. “A Realtor who recently attended a showing said it reminded him of being on the deck of an ocean liner,” she said. “Another unique feature of this expansive penthouse in the sky is that the master bedroom is on the ocean side…most Gold Coast buildings are narrow and deep and don’t provide sufficient space for an oceanfront master suite.” On the opposite side of the apartment, where the elegant entry is located, rooms overlook Kapiolani Park across Kalakaua Avenue and offer a direct, unobstructed view of Diamond Head.

“At $1,858 per square foot, the Tahitienne Penthouse is a great value,” Oliver said. “Due to current zoning restrictions, the Gold Coast neighborhood cannot be duplicated, which contributes to its desirability and exclusivity. In addition to a wide sandy beach within walking distance, reef protected water for swimming and breaking waves for surfing, there are tennis courts, jogging paths, picnic grounds, and other recreational opportunities in the park across the street. The Outrigger Canoe Club, The Elks Club, and Michel’s restaurant are right in the neighborhood. And it’s a short walk to all the dining and shopping options of Waikiki.”

The Tahitienne is located at 2999 Kalakaua Avenue. To arrange a showing, contact Anne Oliver at 292-2800 or email oliver@cbpacific.com.
