Options – Southeastern Oahu – Portlock

The southeastern coast of Oahu, bracketed by Koko Head in the east and Diamond Head the west, claims some of Hawaii’s most desirable and valuable real estate.
Development along this approximately 10 mile stretch of scenic coastline, almost exclusively residential, includes primarily single family homes, a few townhome communities, and a cluster of highrise condominiums at the edge of Waikiki. A hotel, country club, golf course, and two private beach clubs constitute the only additional development. Numerous parks provide acres of open space along the coast and within the communities.
The first permanent or primary residences began replacing vacation cottages on beachfront lots nearly a century ago. Kamaaina families with primary homes in the valleys and on the heights were attracted by the sunny weather and clear, calm waters of Maunalua Bay. Today distinctive estates set the tone for upscale living in neighborhoods from Portlock to Kahala.
Over the years, southeast Oahu oceanfront neighborhoods have continued to reinvent themselves, retaining value despite negative market fluctuations and offering renewed opportunity for local and offshore builders, buyers, and investors.
Oceanfront homes along Portlock Road at the eastern end of Maunalua Bay are always in high demand, but only a few feature sandy beach frontage, making them even more desirable — such as the premier property near the entrance to the community available through Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties for $4.5 million.
With 10,954 square feet of fee simple, R-10-zoned land, 201 Portlock Road includes a four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath main house with family room and den, and a separate one-bedroom cottage for extended family or guests.
Realtor–Associate Malia Kakos, who is co-listing the property with Realtor–Broker Lisa Haeringer, commented that the location is considered one of the best in the neighborhood, with its sandy beach frontage and view of the iconic profile of Diamond Head at the other end of the bay.
Haeringer noted that the main home was built in 1940 and renovated several times through the years, most recently in early 2018.
“In the 1970s,” Haeringer said, “the property was remodeled extensively, which included building a second story and raising the lower level ceiling in the living room, creating modern open spaces with walls of glass to capture the vibrant views. This isn’t one of those small beach houses with small rooms. On the contrary, this home has a large living room framed by a wall of glass doors and windows that open out to the covered lanai for true indoor-outdoor living. The spacious master bedroom with over 1,000 square feet includes a covered lanai, perfect for relaxing while gazing at the view. From the minute someone walks through the front door, they are drawn into the living room, where they are transfixed by the view. ‘Wow’ is usually the first word they say.”
In addition to the ocean and coastline, the home overlooks an expansive, landscaped lawn, which enhances the property’s feeling of isolation, although shopping centers, schools, churches, and many other community amenities are close by.
“The wide, sandy beach seems private, with few people ever venturing by,” Kakos added. “The beachfront location is appealing for both the recreational opportunities it offers and relaxation. Take a leisurely stroll or a dip in the ocean. You can even walk to restaurants, theaters, and shops at Hawaii Kai … or go by boat via the Hawaii Kai Marina.”
