Coastal Options – Southeastern Oahu – Niu Beach

Midway along the Maunalua Bay coastline near Kawaikui Beach Park, Puuikena Drive begins its ascent to the Hawaii Loa Ridge community. Adjacent to the park on 15,938 square feet of land is a 4,313-square-foot, two-story home known as “Hale Puuikena.” Although it bears the address One Puuikena Drive, it is not part of the Hawaii Loa Ridge community. This truly cutting-edge four-bedroom, four-and-a-half bath “smart home” is available from Keller Williams Honolulu for $6.9 million.

“Hale Puuikena has the benefits of the community association’s security patrol passing by regularly and the beautifully manicured landscaping of the turning area that was created to direct traffic upward to the ridge, but it is not part of the association and therefore does not pay dues,” said Keller Williams listing agent Daniel K. Ihara (RA). “It also is one of few homes on the water from which you can turn left to go west on Kalanianaole Highway, providing for a convenient commute to town.”

The home of the earliest recorded owner of the property, Mary Lucas, who lived there in the 1950s, was totally rebuilt in 2016. Lucas was the granddaughter of British Royal Navy officer Alexander Adams who was gifted with 2,400 acres, inclusive of the property, by King Kamehameha I in 1817. In 1994 Hale Puuikena was featured in the television program “This Old House.”

The new structure was designed by Greensand Architects and built by Hawaii Renovators.

“This newly built, custom home has incredible ocean views from every room in the main house,” said Ihara. “The great room features cathedral ceilings, custom coral rock walls, builtin theater system, large Fleet-wood glass pocket doors, and an Invisirail glass panel balcony. Architectural details include interior stairwells on both sides of the structure. The high-end automated window shades and motion-sensor lighting in the bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways provide for a convenience not found in most luxury homes. And you’ll love the ability to control your home from anywhere in the world.”

The kitchen is accented with rich, dark woods and granite countertops and equipped with stainless steel Thermador appliances. A medical-grade air-purification system, triple-filtered water system, and 10 kilowatts of full net-metering photovoltaic system have been added.

The property includes a new garage and separate guest quarters. Its 40-foot setback from the ocean, landscaped backyard, and naupaka bushes create privacy along the waterfront. High rock walls isolate the home from Kawaikui Park and the highway. The west end of Niu Beach is a few steps away.

“There also are 12 video cameras around the property to provide privacy, security, and peace of mind for the affluent buyer,” Ihara added.
