Question: How should a young person who’s just starting out plan ahead to buy a home?
Answer: The first step is to get pre-qualified for a loan by a lender. This will give you an idea of your price range, which will help determine what kind of property you can purchase (condo or single family home) as well as location.
Q: What are your top three suggestions for getting my home in shape to sell?
A: If you’re selling a property that’s occupied, the three most important steps are:
• Remove as much clutter as possible so potential buyers can see the entire living space and imagine how it would look with their design choices.
• Clean, clean, clean.
Do a thorough cleaning from top to bottom including windows, screens and light fixtures. If your carpet is dirty, have it professionally cleaned. Touching up with paint to spruce up worn walls is also a plus.
• Curb appeal. If you’re selling a single family home, keep the yard neat and remove any unnecessary items from the walkways and garage. You only have one chance to make a good first impression!
Q: What do you think about the current real estate climate in Hawaii?
A: The Honolulu Board of Realtors’ January figures show that the median prices for single family homes and condos have dipped slightly while the properties are sitting on the market a little longer. This means that it’s a great time for buyers, particularly with the interest rates holding steady.
