Change your Mindset from Renting to Homeownership

According to the 2019 Census ACS data prior to COVID, 39.83% of households were renters. In some cases, people are waiting for employment opportunities and simply concentrating on building a better life for their family day-to-day. One truth is that some feel trapped or forced to think that homeownership is just a dream. It is naturally hardwired in us to focus on the small wins in life; saving on car insurance, choosing a cheaper rental property, or even buying the store brand items than brand name. This is the balancing act that we are challenged with – choosing increased Quality of Life or being economic/frugal. What if someone told you that with dedication, discipline, and hard work that you could become a homeowner in as little as two years? How about one year? Six months? I talk to clients every month that realize a dream can turn into a reality with the right help. Here are a few of those ways:

Education – Understanding (1) do you qualify and (2) how much for is the first step. Some items such as two years income history in a profession in most cases cannot be waived but there are exceptions. What about understanding how debt affects your qualification? What about credit score? Savings? How do these all work for or against you? What can you do with all of these to increase the amount of home you can buy?

Financial Preparation – The education shows you how, but only you and your family can make it happen. Let’s not sugar- coat reality – preparing for financial goals is tough! It will require sacrifices such as not buying those shiny rims, the latest clothing trend, or that new jewelry. Even things like brown-bagging lunch instead of going to the normal lunch spot with the work crew can help. Monthly savings matter. It will change single dollars to hundreds, hundreds to thousands. Next you know, you have enough for a minimum down payment and closing costs. To do so is tough, but the short term accomplishments will lead you to a long-term victory.

The Right Team – Access to financial resources is critical. Having someone to give you a comprehensive financial analysis and point you towards free resources will change your entire mindset. There are many buyers who had no idea they were able to buy!
