Diamond Head-Kahala

Diamond Head Beachfront
The Diamond Head neighborhood extends from the crater itself to Waikiki and Kapahulu and eastward to Black Point and Kahala. Hawaii’s most prominent geographical feature, designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968, Diamond Head dominates the shoreline of southeastern Oahu. The slopes of the extinct crater, which peaks at 761 feet, are a protected environment comprising parks, conservation land, hiking trails, and beaches as well as some of Hawaii’s most prized real estate.
Historically known as “Leahi,” Diamond Head is imbued with a mystique enhancing the value of homes even beyond the neighborhood that can claim a view of its distinctive profile.
Diamond Head Road essentially loops around the slopes of the crater from Kapiolani Park to Fort Ruger, skirting its flanks and eventually connecting with Kahala Avenue. On the ocean side the road rises above the coast, passing beach parks, lookouts, and the Diamond Head Lighthouse.
Makalapua, a beachfront estate at the base of Diamond Head listed by Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties Realtor Anne Hogan Perry, is one of only 18 residences along this section of coastline. Located at 3229 Diamond Head Road, the 13,456-square-foot property features over 74 feet of linear ocean frontage on a small private beach with a rare oceanfront channel to the open sea.
“In addition to its prized trophy location and sophisticated architecture, this exceptional home also has a rich history as part of the former estate of Sanford Dole, first Territorial Governor of Hawaii,” Perry said. “Makalapua was designed to a standard that far exceeds most luxury properties in Hawaii today… from the elegant entrance to the spacious interior with nearly 4,000 square feet of living space.”
Built in 1978 and extensively remodeled in 2018, the home offers sweeping, unobstructed ocean views. The main two-story residence includes two bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths, but Perry noted that its expansive living areas can be reconfigured to add two more bedrooms. A one bedroom, one-bath 1,308-square-foot cottage is located poolside.
“The living and formal dining rooms open to each other and feature magnificent art deco chandeliers,” Perry said. “Both rooms access the oceanfront lanai with multiple pocket doors and overlook a spectacular water feature. A large alfresco dining area is adjacent to the formal dining room. The oceanfront master suite, which takes up most of the second floor, faces the beach and ocean and opens to a full length lanai.
“The large swimming pool is set like a jewel in the landscaped gardens graced with a waterfall and fragrant Puakinikini trees. The pool is tiled with pearlescent Italian glass and equipped with a cooling and heating system as well as water jets for contraflow swimming. Garden walls are clad in travertine and coral. A hot tub in the oceanfront garden offers views of the ocean and sunsets.
“The exterior walls of the home are masonry clad with Venetian plaster, which is also the finish applied to interior walls. Flooring is ohia, now rare, as well as onyx, marble, and quartzite. Exotic finishes are showcased throughout this magnificent oceanfront residence.”
She added that parking is available on the property, which includes an elegant driveway with two entrances off Diamond Head Road.
Perry is offering the estate for $22,000,000 and showing it by appointment. For information, contact Anne Hogan Perry (R) at (808) 286-6474 or Annehoganperry.com.
