Handling life transitions in real estate

Holding an MBA and an advanced mediation certificate from the Mediation Center of the Pacific, Sisi Takaki, luxury homes specialist with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Hawai’i, takes a unique approach to real estate. “There are times people must buy or sell their homes or properties because they are going through a joyful life transition—like having a baby or getting a job promotion—but it could be because of death or divorce or an unplanned financial need,” she says. “If my clients give me permission, I use my mediation skills to facilitate discussion so that there is a holistic approach to the decisions that have to be made. It’s about making people feel they are being heard.”

With more than 20 years working as a businesswoman in Hawai’i, Takaki also views the idea of luxury differently. Rather than being exclusive, Takaki thinks of ways that everyone can have the feeling of luxury. “My business has shifted to include an overall picture of families and the places they live,” she says.

Takaki says that her immigrant parents raised her to value hard work and dedication, and they taught her that if she works hard, doors will open. She believes that women must continue show up at the table and have a voice that is authentic, meaningful and heartfelt. “That that means being involved with your community,” she says. She volunteers on a weekly basis on cases referred to the Mediation Center of the Pacific from the courts, including but not limited to divorce, child custody, landlord and tenant issues, and business disagreements.
