Hawaii homebuilding students take Top National Awards

Additionally, the Chapter took the third place award in the Two-Year College category of the NAHB Residential Construction Management Competition. For this category award, the HonCC students competed to solve real-life construction management problems and presented their solutions to a judging panel of residential construction industry experts.
The awards were given at the 2015 NAHB International Builders Show in Las Vegas. The HonCC Student Chapter competed against 54 teams representing universities, community colleges, high schools and career technical schools across the country.
Rick Hobson, 2015 president of the Building Industry Association (BIA), a Hawaii affiliate of NAHB, and vice president of sales and marketing for Gentry Homes said, “We are so proud of the Honolulu Community College NAHB Student Chapter and impressed by their commitment and vision in residential construction planning and building techniques. The Hawaii building industry is continually raising the bar to provide the leadership and planning that is necessary to deliver outstanding construction projects in Hawaii. Our homebuilders have adhered to the highest standards over the years. Having a local student chapter that has received recognition from national industry experts brings us hope and promise for the continuation of quality in our built environment for generations to come.”
Gladys Marrone, Chief Executive Officer of the BIA, noted that more than 75,000 builders, suppliers, students and faculty were in attendance at the 2015 NAHB annual conference, while 125,000 attended the International Builders’ Show Design & Construction Week. “The overall competition was challenging but the HonCC Student Chapter was resilient as they demonstrated their amazing aptitude and overall understanding of the building and construction process,” Marrone said.

HonCC Construction Management student and NAHB Chapter president Lana Moe was recognized as an Outstanding Student at the awards ceremony based on her work both for the student chapter and the local BIA due to her academic standing and interest in pursuing a residential building career. “This has been an incredible experience and an amazing honor for the NAHB Student Chapter at Honolulu Community College,” Moe
said. “We’ve learned so much, and we will make good use of that knowledge in our future endeavors. Much appreciation goes out to our advisor, Norman Takeya, for pushing us to succeed in our career choice of becoming construction managers, and to our local NAHB Chapter, BIA Hawaii, for being great supporters and mentors.”
Jerry Howard, CEO of the NAHB, commented, “The NAHB Student Chapter at Honolulu Community College demonstrated an impressive depth of understanding of building industry management, as well as a great deal of talent.”
