Oceanfront Options – The North Shore – Mokuleia
By the time the winter big wave surfing competitions conclude at the famous beaches of Oahu’s North Shore, visitors and competitors from all parts of the world will have been exposed to the energy and ambiance of this unique part of Hawaii. Many have purchased their own personal “piece of paradise,” contributing to the diversity of the North Shore communities.
North Shore real estate has continued to appreciate dramatically over the past three decadess. Homes along the stretch of coastline between Kahuku and Kaena Point range from “beach shacks” to multi-million dollar estates and condominium developments. Kamaaina families have continued to maintain both primary and secondary residences on the North Shore, and companies such as Billabong, Hurley, and Volcom have purchased properties in choice beachfront locations. Commercial development is concentrated primarily in Haleiwa Town, where several new commercial projects have just been completed. Despite the extensive media exposure and the increase in upscale residential real estate development, the North Shore of Oahu continues to resist excesses of urban encroachment and retain its country atmosphere.
One of the most rural oceanfront communities on the North Shore, Mokuleia stretches from Waialua to the rugged coast of Kaena Point, a State Park, nature preserve, and westernmost tip of the island of Oahu.
Close to the end of Mokuleia’s long sandy coastline is a four-bedroom, three-bath home on 8,601 square feet of fee simple land offered by REMAX Sunset Homes for the unusual but attractive price of $1,144,888.
The home is owned by an Army major and his wife, who lived there with their four children until their recent deployment. They are now renting it out on a month-to-month basis, pending its sale to a new owner. Listing Realtor Ray Prosek said the home has appeal for owner-occupants, including second home buyers, as well as investors since it rents for $5,000 a month.
Built in 1961 and remodeled in 2004, the 1,292 square-foot home is buffered from the ocean by a solid, legal seawall, with access to the water during winter months and to the beach that returns usually during summer months.
“The seawall adds lots of value to the property, as it’s very difficult and expensive to obtain a new permit as well as to build one when you do have the permit,” Prosek said.
The newly painted home’s interior features vaulted ceilings, ceramic tile floors, granite counter tops, ceiling fans, and kitchen and laundry appliances. The master bedroom has an ocean view, spacious walk-in closet, and a master bath with “his” and “her” sinks.
Other amenities include two Jacuzzi bathtubs, an enclosed two-car garage with extra storage space, a large lanai with a Trex deck, an outdoor shower, and tropical landscaping with mature coco palms.
The property is about 10 to 15 minutes from the historic town of Haleiwa with its numerous options for shopping and dining. Close by are the small, private Dillingham Airfield, Mokuleia polo grounds, Camp Mokuleia, and Mokuleia Beach Park.
