Oceanfront Options – The North Shore – Waialua

By the time the winter big wave surfing competitions conclude at the famous beaches of Oahu’s North Shore, visitors and competitors from all parts of the world will have been exposed to the energy and ambiance of this unique part of Hawaii. Many have purchased their own personal “piece of paradise,” contributing to the diversity of the North Shore communities.

North Shore real estate has continued to appreciate dramatically over the past three decadess. Homes along the stretch of coastline between Kahuku and Kaena Point range from “beach shacks” to multi-million dollar estates and condominium developments. Kamaaina families have continued to maintain both primary and secondary residences on the North Shore, and companies such as Billabong, Hurley, and Volcom have purchased properties in choice beachfront locations. Commercial development is concentrated primarily in Haleiwa Town, where several new commercial projects have just been completed. Despite the extensive media exposure and the increase in upscale residential real estate development, the North Shore of Oahu continues to resist excesses of urban encroachment and retain its country atmosphere.

Just west of Haleiwa is the kamaaina community of Waialua, a former sugar mill town that now hosts primarily smaller diversified farming operations and generally flies under the radar compared with the rest of the North Shore.

Its half-mile or so of wide, sandy beach features surfing spots, none as famous as those more eastward along the coast, such as Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach, but favored by local residents. Commercial attractions are spread throughout its two-and-a-half square miles of geography, including the historic Waialua Sugar Mill with its unique collection of shops, boutiques, arts and crafts studios, and food and produce vendors.

This North Shore community’s low profile is exactly why it’s an appealing place to live, especially in residential developments makai of Waialua Beach Road.

The first oceanfront development west of Haleiwa overlooks sandy beach and includes one home with the additional luxury of open space looking eastward over conservation land – a three-story, 1,506-square-foot home on 5,209 square feet of fee simple land at the end of Kahaone Place.

Offered by Carvill Sotheby’s International Realty for $1,595,000 and listed by Realtor Patty Bell, the property abuts privately owned conservation land that extends approximately 300 yards to the tip of the Paukauila Stream peninsula. The land includes a historic cemetery that in recent years has been the focus of a community restoration effort.

Bell said the double-wall home was built with a variety of woods, many milled on the site, including teak, bamboo, mahogany, cherry, and ironwood. It features two generous-sized bedrooms with walk-in closets, three full baths, and a chef’s kitchen with a butler’s pantry, Viking gas range, a beverage cooler, and a pasta pot filler. PV panels keep energy costs low. Two lanais each on the second and third floors provide panoramic views of the ocean and mountains.

The attached, furnished single-family home features a three-car garage with wide doors on both the mauka and makai sides of the house, so surfboards, kayaks, boats, or other watercraft can be transported eastily from the garage to the ocean.

Other amenities include hardwood, marble, granite, and carpeted flooring, split AC, drapes, ceiling fans, laundry appliances, an automated garage door, and an outdoor shower.

Nearby are schools with all grade levels, churches, retailers, public parks where community events are held, and an award-winning library.
