The North Shore

Sunset Beach

The North Shore of Oahu – the epicenter of the sport of surfing – is transformed during late fall and winter months by the north swell and big waves that set the stage for surfing competitions held there annually. These events, as well as the scenic attractions of the North Shore, are widely covered by international news media. The surfing season also generates an influx of visitors, surfers, and competitors from around the world, as well as real estate buyers expecting to find an inventory of the best that the area has to offer on the market at attractive prices.

Sunset Beach, a mile-long sandy slice of the North Shore, is one of the world’s most famous beaches and location of the second event in the prestigious Triple Crown of Surfing held in November. This and other surfing events at North Shore beaches attract top competitors from around the world who arrive with their entourages and families to give a major boost to North Shore businesses. Realtors take advantage of the opportunity for exposure and place available properties on the market.

The North Shore offers a variety of home styles in a broad price range…the most desirable and pricey generally located on or close to the beaches. The Sunset area includes the Sunset Beach neighborhood, which extends from Rocky Point to Velzeyland and across Kam Highway. Lot sizes range from 5,000 square feet to over an acre.

“Although surfing is an important dynamic in the North Shore culture, it’s mainly the country lifestyle that attracts and retains new residents,” said Realtor Chaney Padaca, owner of Hawaii Seaside Realty.

Padaca and her husband Myles, a winner of the World Cup of Surfing, a former Sunset event, and the Triple Crown of Surfing title, have been residents of the area for 26 years.

“The Sunset Beach area is favorable to families with children,” Padaca said. “They can ride their

bikes around the neighborhood and on the bike path to the elementary school. They can also swim and learn to surf at a sheltered area within Sunset Beach.

“I am currently listing a luxury home right on this section of beach. Due to the very desirable location, homes with this beach frontage do not come up for sale very often and, when they do, it’s usually with a higher price tag.”

Located on a 10,000-square-foot lot fronting a wide section of sandy beach, Padaca’s listing is one of the largest homes in the area with 5,605 square feet of interior living space augmented by 1,076 square feet of lanais. The two-story home includes five bedrooms, seven baths, guest quarters, and a gym. The property is walled and fenced for privacy and professionally landscaped with a grassy lawn extending to the beachfront. The oasis-like backyard features a custom-designed heated swimming pool and spa.

“This amazing estate has so much to offer,” Padaca said. “It is designed for indoor/outdoor living and takes advantage of the best sunset views the North Shore has to offer. After a swim in the ocean or swimming pool, relax in the custom spa. The second-floor master suite has its own private living room, a bar, electric blinds, large wallk-in closet, and floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the ocean. A bonus room connected to the master has a large deck with sweeping ocean and coastal views. The property is secured with an electric gate. There is plenty of parking in the driveway, the carport, and the two-car garage, plus lots of storage space for surfboards and more. This is a great family home and also ideal for entertaining guests.”

Padaca added that shops and restaurants are just a short drive up Kam Highway to Old Haleiwa Town and the North Shore Marketplace.
